Bozoma Saint John’s Experience

During an interview with Bozoma Saint John and Glamour, Saint John mentioned the following. “Every time I board [business class], it’s like, “Oh, are you sitting in the right seat?” I make sure to keep my boarding pass out just in case somebody has a question,” At first this seemed to me as no big deal and just something that all passengers generally get asked whilst on board. However, once I delved a bit deeper into the CNBC article, it became apart that this was an example of a greater background issue.

Bozoma Saint John is Uber’s newly appointed chief brand officer. She was hired in order to help Uber resolve their lack of diversity in the work place after multiple reporting's of Uber lacking diversity. Her number 1 rule for increasing diversity for Uber was starting by hiring more women. With 49.8% of Uber’s workforce being white and majority male it did mean that Saint John would have a lot of work ahead of her.

Going back to her experience on the plane. It somewhat reflects the general stereotypical views of the average person that aren’t always recognized by people who aren't of a minority background. As many flight attendants are probably accustomed to seeing mainly white males flying on business trips covered by their company. Saint John’s experience demonstrates that the world still isn't used to seeing women in roles of authority let alone being from a minority back ground. Therefore, my conclusion on this experience is that even though the world is becoming more equal, we still have a long way to go before stereotypes are no longer ingrained in us.
